A specific example of human-caused mutations in natural populations that have created unnatural or abnormal variants (deviations from the norm) is that reported by Shaklette (1962, 1964), who described cases where a diversity of mutant clones of Epilobium angustifolium and Vaccinium uliginosum originated on radioactive pitchblende deposits at Port Radium within a few metres of the usual variants.

Dans les deux cas, l'augmentation de la diversité génétique ne constitue pas une amélioration, car il s'agit d'un écart par rapport à la norme choisie. Shaklette relate un cas précis où des mutations provoquées par les humains dans une population naturelle ont entraîné l'apparition de variantes «artificielles» ou anormales : une variété de clones mutants d'Epilobium angustifolium et de Vaccinium uliginosum sont apparus sur des dépôts de pechblende radioactive, à Port Radium, à quelques mètres des variantes normales.
